NEWS & Information
Volunteers gathered in front of the Marcus Hook Community Center on October 5, 2011 to create a demonstration rain garden. The Marcus Hook Borough Council agreed to work with the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary on this project. Community volunteers put the finishing touches on this brand new rain garden located in the grass oval directly in front of the Borough’s Community Center at Market Square Memorial Park on Delaware Avenue. A rain garden is a shallow depression vegetated with native grasses and plants. Stormwater runoff from roads, driveways, and downspouts flows into the garden, soaks into the ground and is filtered through natural process. Rain gardens help: •Reduce pollution in our waters! •Boost property values while cutting landscape maintenance costs! •Attract native birds and butterflies! The community workers and borough officials who came together to build the rain garden included Bill Cox, Tom Imburgia, Gene Taylor, Bruce Dorbian, George Windsor, Marie Horn, Brian Mercadante, Michael Manerchia, Barry Kersey, Laura Rodgers, John Soles, Mark Duffey and Mark Moyer. Overall direction and guidance came from Laura Whalen of the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary.
